History

Unsatisfied with the homeschooling curricula available in the 1990’s,  we began to research a variety of  educational methods and approaches, as well as educational goals. Again and again we were drawn back to the Great Books movement – the return to the classics – as the core element needing restoration and recommended by the leading lights for educational reform, including Mortimer J. Adler, former editor of Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Great Books of the Western World. Under the inspiration and guidance of Dr. Adler we introduced the Great Books movement to homeschoolers through the inception of the Angelicum Academy in 2000 A.D.

Before designing the Angelicum Academy curriculum we came to the realization that an educational program that utilized the liberal arts and the great books (with optional, online Socratic discussion groups), would be more efficacious for students if it were based upon the shared starting points of a common creed as defined and clarified by the Catholic magisterial authority. This is the mission of the Angelicum Academy – to combine the great books, with an intellectual assent to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Our teaching methodology is grounded in Catholic doctrine – which is the great counterpoint to modern errors.
